In-Spired

Otis and I took a walk today up to "Spire", Andy Goldsworthy's new sculpture in the Presidio. Spire is made up of 37 cypress trees - trees that needed to come down as part of the reforestation projects within the Presidio. It's just inside the Arguello Gate, near the golf course and across the street from Inspiration Point.

Because they were initially planted by the military in a short span of time beginning in 1883, most of the cypress trees in the Presidio have reached old age at roughly the same time and have become a hazard to anyone walking under them. The decision to replant the same trees - which are not native to the area and will again decline all at the same time in the future - is a controversial one. (Hint: Don't get Dave started on this topic.) But they are being re-planted nonetheless, and I'm glad to see that one of the world's preeminent sculptors has chosen to use the site as inspiration.

This interview with the artist is interesting. As with most of his sculptures, Spire is meant to eventually become one with its surroundings. As the baby cypresses grow up, they will eventually envelope the sculpture completely.

The Spire in all its glory - hopefully the people in the photo give some sense of scale:

Aw, ya gotta love Andy Goldsworthy. And Otis, for being so strong in not lifting his leg. Well done, young sir!

Did Otis really not take the opportunity to commune with the artist in his way?

Supposedly the Presidio is the future site of Starfleet Academy.
